I really enjoyed watching the video in class.  I thought it was great that these women can change their lives just by learning how to put together some circuit boards and make solar powered appliances.  The quality of life for these women was saddening.  They are socially oppressed by their husbands and receive little respect.  At the end of the film however I was happy to see that Rafea had moved away from her husband and was able to keep her children.  With technological advances comes social empowerment at least in the case of these women.  I was kind of angered by Rafea's husband trying to control her and not let her go back to the school.  I think he was jealous and too lazy to learn something himself so he just kept her down.  I am glad that she found power in her education and was able to change her life.

I think this image perfectly describes the situation in Rafea's and many other women's lives.

  1. Yes, I agree that the film was encouraging, it gives hope to anyone who has felt they are so low that there is no hope or way out. The whole community was unemployed and desperate. This opportunity changed things for a few. Feeling poor is a perspective however. I think after they had a light and solar heat in a home with real walls that they felt rich. Anytime we compare ourselves to others we feel that we are "poor" but by appreciating the little things we do have we can feel "rich". The oppression many women suffer may never truly end, but each of us can do our part to see that things in or control make a difference.

  2. The film was great in showing how educating women can empower them to do great things! When Rafea was able to learn how to make the solar circuit boards it gave her the freedom to move away from her husband. It was saddening to see the living environments of these women and their children, but even more saddening to see how some of the husbands treated their wives. I agree when you said that Rafea's husband was jealous of the knowledge she learned. Instead of trying to control her he should have been encouraging her because she was trying to better the family.

  3. In my opinion this film was very interesting. I thought it was interesting how an uneducated women could learn how to do such things, This goes to show that anyone can really do anything they want to as long as they dedicate themselves. Also this is a good example of what we talked about in class related to modernization. Due to modernization Rafea used technology to gain money to be able to move away and live a better life. As in the US women can have jobs and make money and live a good life. Rafea was modernizing here life so she could do the same thing.
